Post-Doctoral Fellow
Dr. Lauren Pile
Lauren will spend a year at SEL as a post-doc in order to wrap up several research projects started during her PhD program while publishing papers from her dissertation. These projects include: prescribing an additional fire treatment and taking new measurements on her PhD research plots, studying hurricane and ice storm interactions on forest dynamics, stem and growth analysis of Chinese tallow in comparison to fast-growing native trees, and investigating bark thickness of exotic, invasive woody species in southeastern USA and its implication for fire adaptation and dormant-season herbicide treatments. In addition, she will work with a team of collaborators to determine if landscape classification systems can be used to estimate fuel loads across the Appalachian mountains. Lauren holds PhD and MFR from Clemson University and BS from American Military University.
Ph.D. Student
Timothy Shearman
Tim is conducting his dissertation research on the community response to the loss of red bay (Persea borbonia) to laurel wilt disease. Tim's interest are in plant and animal interactions, forest disturbance and succession, and lichen ecology. He is an alumnus of the State University of New York at Stony Brook with a BA in Environmental Studies and of the State University of New York, Plattsburgh with a MS in Natural Science.
Deliang Lu
Deliang is visiting PhD student from Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Science. He is conducting an collaborative research on how gap size and within-gap positions affect forest regeneration in northeastern China. He will spend two years of his PhD program at SEL. His visit is supported by Chinese National Science Foundation. At his home institution, Deliang is advised by Dr. Jiaojun Zhu. Delaing received his BS in forestry from Northeast Forestry University.
